About Us
On 11th April 1988, a dream was realized for the people of Kolkata in the sylvan surroundings of Behala. Under the guidance of the well-known philanthropist and industrialist Shri Madhav Prasadji Birla and Smt. Priyamvada Birla, M. P. Birla Foundation Education Society, a non-profit Institution, established the M. P. Birla Foundation H. S. School on James Long Sarani, Behala, Kolkata.
Initially the school, with strength of 1500 students, was affiliated to the CBSE. The first Class X batch appeared for the CBSE Examination in March 1993 in which all 65 students secured first division marks. Later, the school switched over to ICSE in the year 1995. In 1996, the school was upgraded to the plus 2 category, catering to both Science and Commerce streams. Every year, the students continue to come out with flying colours not only in the board examinations, but also in All-India competitive examinations, thus ensuring their place in the premier institutes for higher studies. The school has grown from strength to strength since its inception in 1988. The present strength of the school stands at 3100. What would M. P. Birla Foundation H. S. School be without the MPBian’s Academic excellence along with co-curricular activities which has been the hallmark of this institution.
The primary aim of the school is to impart and lay emphasis on sound moral education, values, principles, skills and knowledge and thereby encourage students to strive for excellence in all fields of endeavour. In keeping pace with the modern technology, the school has introduced Smart Class and Mindspark classes to enhance the learning skills of students.
In the field of extra- curricular activities, the students of this institution have brought several laurels to the school.
An all-rounded system of education has helped M. P. Birla Foundation H. S. School to produce an ever increasing list of alumni who have made a name for themselves in diverse fields. To name a few, Bhubanjyoti Bhattacharya received the extremely prestigious Subramaniam Chandrashekhar Fellowship for a PhD program in Physics in the University of Chicago. Sayantan Sharma is pursuing his Post–Doctoral research work in Physics art Bielefeld, Germany after completing his PhD from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Dipanjan Das, another alumnus, is currently based in New York, working with the Google in their Research and Development wing. Rajiv Narula of 1998 ISC batch is presently Asst. Professor, Canton, New York. Mohit Khumbat of 1999 ISC batch is a faculty at the University of Korea. Dr. Santanu Panja, who has earned a great reputation as an oncologist, is currently attached to Apollo Gleneagles Hospital, Kolkata. The present Regional Director of ASSOCHAM, Debmalya Banerjee, is an alumnus of this institution. Even in the field of performing arts – singer Anupam Roy, actor Sayantani Ghosh, actor Tridha Chowdhury and drummer Sourish Kumar are all former MPBians. These names are only a few of the host of others who have done their Alma Mater proud in various fields of life, both in India and abroad.
The quiet environment and verdant greenery of the school provide the right ambience for a “shiksha – ashram”.
The school is, perhaps, the only institution in West Bengal, which provides “Mentors” for weak students who are under their guidance and supervision. They help the child to overcome his/ her weakness by assisting the child both inside and outside school hours. These mentors are the teachers of the school and if required they visit the homes of the students to understand their problems and solve the same.
